Symptoms of Depression

Depression is a common, yet serious, mental disorder. This disorder can cause constant feelings of sadness and despair.

Depression affects the most basic aspects of human behavior. It is a mental health condition that can affect a person's mood, energy levels, and overall well-being. It's more than just feeling sad or down temporarily.

People experiencing depression may have persistent feelings of negative emotions. “Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities you once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease your ability to function at work and home” (Torres).

Symptoms include “feeling sad or having a depressed mood, loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed, changes in appetite, trouble sleeping or sleeping too much, loss of energy or increased fatigue, increase in purposeless physical activity or slowed movements or speech, feeling worthless or guilty, difficulty thinking/concentrating/making decisions, thoughts of death or suicide” (Torres).

These feelings of sadness and lack of interest can take the good qualities out of someone’s life, causing them to become even more depressed, or worse, suicidal.

People who do not know much about depression tend to think it is just the feeling of sadness. This is incorrect. Not only do people with depression feel constant waves or negative emotions, it also hinders all aspects of their lives.

Feeling sad and having depression is not the same thing.
